Young Visitors

We present a richly diverse programme for children and teens that offers all kinds of interesting ways to discover art. Our museum educational efforts are intended to build a bridge between the artworks and our young visitors' realm of experience. Our welcoming format places prime emphasis on an active and playful approach to art. Please note that advance reservations are required for some of the activities.

Young People’s Art School

Since 2009, the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Training and Culture of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate has supported the Kunsthalle Mainz's Jugendkunstschule, or art school for young people. Nearly all of the programmes in the area of art education benefit from this subsidised programme entitled Green Tower / Art Power.

Our educational concept is constantly in flux as our cooperative projects with schools and extra-scholastic educational institutions continue to be expanded and intensified. We hope to develop new concepts with other partners—from other areas of culture and art, for example—in the future.

Art up Close: A Kunsthalle Mainz Cooperation Project

Under the title "Kunst ganz nah" – "art up close" – the Feldbergschule elementary school in Mainz, the school social work office and the Kunsthalle Mainz entered into a local alliance in August 2013.

The project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The project's aim is to turn the Kunsthalle Mainz into a place in the direct vicinity of the Feldbergschule that offers the school's pupils an open and inviting field of experience.

The role of the social work department is to ensure the involvement of so-called educationally disadvantaged children.

Teacher-Preview

At the beginning of the exhibitions, teachers of all subjects at all types of schools, as well as staff members of extra-scholastic institutions for children and teens in Mainz and the vicinity, are invited to join us on an orientation tour. Within that context, we will present our current educational programme and give participants plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss ideas.

Readings – Otto-Schott-Gymnasium Mainz Gonsenheim

As part of a project initiated by Susanne Böswald, German teacher at the Mainz-Gonsenheim grammar school, pupils regularly read texts they have written themselves in response to works of contemporary art on display at the Kunsthalle Mainz. Work assignments aided the pupils in finding a literary approach. They wrote their texts directly in front of the artworks in the galleries, and then reflected on them in class.

Each project concludes with a public reading at the Kunsthalle Mainz.

Meeting Contemporary Art

Since school year 2015/16 the Frauenlobgymnasium offers under the direction of Gitte Staegemann for its pupil the optional subject "Kunst erleben in der Kunsthalle Mainz". The followers are visiting every exhibition three times minimum and discuss the art work. Afterwards they put their impressions into practice. The results are presented in the school library by a self curated show.
